Overview

The establishment of WEC (World Economic and Environmental Conference) was derived from the "Green New Deal" proposed by the United Nations in 2008. It is an annual international summit with the focus on China's economic and environmental fields, aims to establish a win-win government and enterprise exchange and cooperation platform on climate change, sustainable development and economic growth, take the lead in making a transition towards green and ecological development modes, and jointly handle lasting and deteriorating environmental issues during human activities and economic development.

Since 2008, the conference has been successfully held for four years with over 4,000 attendees from 60 countries and over 30 international organizations, government agencies, professional societies and associations, jointly witness sustainable development between global economy and environment, green journey on ecological environment and future development. Currently, WEC has evolved into an important summit with deep social influence and brand fame in energy conservation, environmental protection and new energy, low-carbon economic fields.

Abulaiti Abudurexiti, vice chairman of CPPCC, pointed out: Climate change is one of the most severe challenges humanity faces in the 21st century. WEC, as an important annual event, aims to call on various countries transform towards a greener ecological development, jointly respond to climate change and deteriorating environmental problems with all walks of life in the course of human activities and economic development, deepen the topic of harmonious development of economy and environment, perform environmental protection mission and responsibilities.

Edmond Alphandéry, Former French Minister of Economy, Chairman of the Euro50 Group, indicated that: The 4th World Economic and Environmental Conference is an event of the utmost importance, I strongly support this conference, I think very it is useful that we all discuss the problems created by carbon emissions mainly in terms of climate change, and that we debate the solutions that can be put forward at the international level. This initiative is therefore most welcome.

Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, pointed out in his greeting letter: this Conference will send a strong message to the preparatory process for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD). Its low-carbon development during economic transition is timely and practical.

Jacques Diouf, Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, indicated that: I have the pleasure to wish to greet and support the participants of the 4th World Economic and Environmental Conference (WEC). This Conference is an important event in today's efforts to address the global challenge posed by the "Food-Energy-Climate Nexus". As the topic of this Conference suggests, the energy access gap around the world is large, thus as countries further develop and climate change impacts worsen, the urgency to find alternative solutions increases.

Josette Sheeran, Director of The World Food Programme, Deputy Secretary General of UN, expressed that: the World Economic and Environmental Conference in Qingdao, China, takes place at a critical time in history. Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed increased economic growth, and an ever more inter-connected global economy which has lifted millions of people out of poverty.  Advancements in new technology as well as increasing flows of information and knowledge have connected people across the globe, providing them with new important opportunities.

Georg Kell, Director General of UN Global Compact Office, indicated that: It is with pleasure that I send greetings to the fourth World Economic and Environmental Conference. You are convening at a critical time. Indeed, building a green economy presents tremendous opportunities for business, for example, through investments in green and renewable technologies. International cooperation and collective action is crucial in this regard.

Guy Saint-Jacques, Ambassador of Canada to China, expressed that: since the first WEC in 2008, WEC has become an important platform through which governmental officials, enterprises and academic representatives may make exchange and share views. We hope more professionals in the globe may participate in the conference, working together to address the environmental challenges we are facing.

Robert J.Aumann, Nobel Laureate in economics, indicated that: the de-greening of the world is the most pressing issue facing mankind today. Every year many thousands of living species are destroyed, never to return to our globe. It is incumbent on the world to devise effective practical means to halt this destruction. This must be done not by grandiose declarations, but by providing appropriate incentives. I wish the fourth World Economic and Environmental Conference the best of success in addressing these challenging and difficult problems.

As a professional, international and comprehensive exchange, and cooperation platform, WEC aims to push China's sustainable development, establish win-win development modes between the environment and the economy. Over the past five year, WEC has gained sufficient and active appraisal from www.gov.cn, CCTV, Phoenix TV, Xinhua, China Daily, www.people.com.cn, News of Science and Technology, Interfax, Reuters, Fortune, Lian He Zao Bao, Wenhui Daily, and so on.

Its organizational activities focus not only on the facilitation of industry discussion, academic exchange, and policy analysis and proposals, but the positive establishment of a high-end platform between "government, enterprise, and financial groups" and "technology, market, and investment" in the fields of energy conservation and environmental protection, new energy and a low-carbon economy, and serves as a connecting link between industrial development and economic effect by highlighting the government’s role: enhancing project communication, promoting market cooperation, introducing development capital, urging dialogue and communication among government officials, industrial experts and enterprise leaders; understanding and implementing multi-level analysis on policy, capital and market in an international perspective, with a view to pushing forward sustainable development between the environment and the economy.
