Lenovo’s Road to Sustainable Development

Since IBM was purchased by Lenovo in 2004, eight years have passed by. During the period, we have witnessed numerous changes in Lenovo.

Before purchasing IBM, Lenovo was an entirely Chinese owned enterprise with a turnover of 2.9 billion dollars per year. Nowadays, the company has its own international subsidiaries in many countries with revenue last year of 34 billion dollars, of which Lenovo earned 2.9 billion dollars and IBM earned 10 billion dollars. In terms of the global market share, Lenovo achieved 15% while HP only held 0.5% more. Lenovo was able to complete the acquisition and grow into an international company due to the concept of sustainable development and the practical work undertaken by the company. After purchasing IBM, Lenovo began developing a sustainable development strategy and strove to be a pioneer in environment protection. In recent years, Lenovo has taken action on reducing its own emissions, using renewable energy, establishing a win-win industrial chain and monitoring usage of products. This year, Lenovo plans to sell over 50 million PCs and 60 millions laptops. However, these products are high in power consumption; how can these computers be used to reduce energy consumption? Lenovo has launched nearly 100 projects to reduce energy consumption by 5% of each new product. In the American headquarters, most of Lenovo's energy use is from renewable sources. However, this kind of energy mechanism is not established worldwide, and can only be feasible in developed country like America. In addition to these measures, Lenovo provides a large number of bicycles to personnel in offices in Beijing or America. The company has also constructed a corporate environmental responsibility website, which encourages stuff to use public transport. As to an enterprise, the basic environmental awareness should be emphasized from the stuff. As a result, the company's carbon emissions in the last two years were zero. Some PC companies like Dell and HP have not been involved in manufacture, whereas Lenovo has increased factory construction in last three or four years. Overall, Lenovo still faces great challenges in green and low-carbon development.
